The United Way of Mahaska County's annual fundraising campaign is coming to a close but Executive Director Brianne Fitzgerald says it's not too late to give. Last year, local businesses and individuals donated Four hundred and twenty five thousand dollars and this year, Fitzgerald hopes to top that.  The money will then be distributed to local non-profits to meet educational, health, or financial needs.

"Just general assistance, too, basic needs.  You know, we want to put a roof over our heads.  We can't pay our rent.  You know, financial stability classes to make sure people can keep ahead of what the economy's bringing," says Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald says she doesn't want to say what the United Way's goal is for this year, because that goal doesn't mean all needs are being met.  These are all the applications from non-profits asking for United Way money.  Fitzgerald says there's typically about $100,000 more asked for than they're able to provide.

"Setting a goal is just setting a goal for us to know how much money we'd like to be able to give and try to do what we can.  But in reality, we always need so much more than what that goal ever shows."

If you'd like to help the United Way help the community, there's still time to give.  You can send donations to 500 High Avenue West or give them a call at 641-673-6043 for more information.
